UTAH ROAD TRIP!

David's brother, Dan and his wife Berta moved to a small town (Nibley) north of Salt Lake City, Utah a couple of years ago. This was David's first visit to their new place.

Happy reunion!

Dan's daughter Kayla (who is currently living in Tennessee, attending college) is quite the photographer - this is some of her work.

Dan and Berta's back yard.

We went to a nearby lake (Hyrum Reservoir) to do some canoeing.

And some hiking.

Speaking of hiking, the next day we headed up to the mountains for a hike up to the Wind Cave.

Quite the view.

Dan also took David to show him where he is working (Campbell Scientific).

His company is doing well - they are expanding the business.

His office, and one of his projects.

We also went to Dan's son's (Brian) house.

Brian and his wife Ana moved to Utah at about the same time - Brian got a job with the same company.

Dan and Berta have some property nearby - they may build a house here someday and move again!

This is where one of Dan's sensors is located. It is solar powered and monitors the water quality.

David's friend Eugene lives in Salt Lake City. He moved here about 10 years ago. He joined us for dinner before David flew back home.

EUROPEAN ROAD TRIP!

We took off from the S.F Airport one Saturday morning, heading for Frankfurt Germany.

We met Jocelyn in Frankfurt!

Then we went shopping

We walked around downtown Frankfurt.

We found a place to have some lunch. (David was feeling a bit faded).

And more shopping...

More walking.

More Shopping.

More walking.

We found a skyscraper near our hotel that had an observation deck, this is Frankfurt at night.

Then we headed to the Frankfurt train station where we took a train to Berlin.

We changed trains in Munich, the Munich train station was huge!
After we checked in our hotel in Berlin we found a Starbucks.

The next day in Berlin we took the walking tour to learn about the history of the Berlin Wall.
This was Jocelyn's favorite part of the trip.

The tour included the World War II Jewish Holocaust Memorial.

You can still see bits and pieces of the wall where it was preserved.

After the tour we headed to the Brandenburg Gate.

Throughout the city the remnants of the Berlin Wall are marked with a strip of original cobblestone and a metal plaque. It's strange to see this line zig-zagging across side-walks and streets as you walk through the city.

From Berlin we rode the train to Salzburg, Austria.

We arrived at Salzburg late in the evening, but after checking in the hotel we walked across the Rhine River to see the downtown area.

From the castle, overlooking Salzburg.

Inside the castle.

View from the castle.

This is the view from Untersberg Mountain, about 3000 feet high, where we went via a gondola.

The view was spectacular.

There is a small restaurant at the top of the mountain.

After Austria, we rode the train to Switzerland, this is at the Zurich train station.

In Bern, Switzerland - electric scooters!

Hiking in Bern.

Looking west from the downtown area.

Downtown Bern - lunchtime.

Enjoying the sunshine with my daughter.

Bern: interesting mix of old and new.

The park on the far side of the river houses a family of bears, symbolic of the town's name.

The view west, after hiking up a hill on the east side of town.

The next day we drove with Haruko's friend Lola to Grindelwald.

We had lunch and headed back down to the valley and back to Interlaken, where Haruko lived for nearly 10 years!

Interlaken, Switzerland.

At Lola's house - Manami came to visit.

After a few days in Switzerland we headed back north to Munich.

We found a restaurant downtown where we enjoyed dinner and some beer.

My sister's Munich branch of her shopping store chain.

Downtown Munich at night.

The next day we went to the Oktoberfest in Munich. It was the 200th year of Oktoberfest.

When in Rome...

This is just one of the many beer halls. We had lunch here. The other beer halls were similar; lots of tables, a live traditional German band, pretzels by the basket, and lots of beer.

The view of Oktoberfest from the Ferris Wheel. Most of the long-roofed buildings are beer-halls.

We had a great time at the Oktoberfest!

This is an area on the eastern side of Munich where we had dinner with our new friends.

We met Lucia on the train from Frankfurt to Munich, she and her husband Michael invited us to have dinner at their apartment. They made a delicious dinner and we had a wonderful conversation.

After Munich we rode the train back to Frankfurt. In downtown Frankfurt there was celebration of the 20th anniversary of the reunification of East and West Germany. We had good timing...

The live band was playing American oldies ;-)
